CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE: In the Dark of Night

Harley—

It’s 2:00 am when I hear a commotion in the hallway outside my room. Running footsteps and shouts, then the unmistakable sound of gunfire.

Wolf’s daughters startle awake.

“What was that?” Wolf’s daughter, Ella asks.

“Gunfire, I think. Stay here.” I slip a sweat jacket on over my tank and leggings.

“Where are you going?”

“To find out what’s happening. Don’t leave this room. I’m sure your mother or father will come check on you.” With that, I slip out the door. The clubhouse is dark, and I make my way down the hall. When I get to the main room, a spray of bullets hit the old multi-paned factory windows high up in the wall. Shattered glass falls like broken icicles, raining down on the floor.

I dive behind the jukebox and peek across the room.

Cole and my father are at the open door with assault rifles. I can see more men out in the gravel lot, squatting behind motorcycles. Their weapons flare with orange light as they return fire into the darkness.

The roar of motorcycles fades into the distance, and Cole and my father stand. Cole turns back and speaks to someone in the shadows behind the bar.

“Stay ready until we know they’re gone.”

“Yes, sir.”

The two men disappear into the darkness outside. I look across the room and see it’s Brayden with a long gun propped on the bar top, aimed at the door.

“Brayden,” I hiss, and his head turns.

He can’t see me in the shadows.

“It’s me.” I stand and emerge into the dim light.

“Harley, what the fuck are you doing? Get back to your room.”

“No way.” I approach him. “What’s happening?”

“I don’t know for sure. Billy and TJ were at the gate and called in that some bikes were rolling up slow and quiet. My dad sounded the alarm, and everyone came running.”

“They just shot the place up and left?”

“I think they may have thought they’d get in and do more damage, but the men met them with a hail of bullets, and they took off. Your father wouldn’t let my dad go out there. Protecting the president, I guess.”

“Is Reckless out there?” I ask.

Brayden frowns. “I guess so, why?”

I ignore him and walk to the door.

“Harley,” Brayden barks. “Get back here.”

He doesn’t stop me, though, and I step outside. There’s a crowd of guys standing by the gate, talking in muffled voices. I don’t see anyone injured and breathe a sigh of relief. I notice one of the bikes has a slowly hissing tire and another is on its side, shot up.

“Is everyone okay?” I yell out, needing to know.

“Harley?” I hear my father’s voice. “Get back inside. Now.”

In the dim starlight, I make out Reckless. His silhouette moves a step toward me, and I know in that moment, he wants to come to me. I want him to. I want him to hold me and tell me it’s okay. That he’s okay. But he can’t. We both know that.

He stares at me for a long moment, and I stand there.
